The news about Dalton McGuinty being the subject of an OPP interview related to the gas plants investigation affected the campaigns for next week’s provincial election. However, the Ontario Provincial Police recently confirmed in statement that the former premier is not part of the investigation. Detective Inspector, Paul Beesley, confirmed that the OPP interviewed McGuinty in April, but stressed on Thursday night that the ex-premier has been nothing but helpful.

According to the anti-rackets squad detective in charge of the case, Beesley, “Dalton McGuinty has been co-operative with the OPP investigators and he is not the subject of our investigation at this time.” Beesley gave these remarks in response to several news stories that alleged that the news of McGuinty’s interview could jolt the election campaign. Acting Inspector John Browning revealed on Thursday that the force “obtained a production order from the court in Ottawa for certain documents in relation to this ongoing investigation which it served on employees of the Ontario legislature in Toronto.” He alleged that the legislative assembly staffers, i.e. bureaucrats and not political aides, have only 10 days to produce the documents.

Browning added that “the OPP cannot offer any comment about the interview, details about the production order or additional comment about the investigation as it is ongoing.” The police is investigating allegations of deleted emails related to his cancellation of gas‎-fired power plants in Mississauga and Oakville before the 2011 election. It has not laid any charges so far and neither has any allegation been proven in court.
