Law enforcement agencies have confirmed to have expanded the search area for three inmates who escaped in a helicopter from a detention centre in Quebec City. This was the second helicopter-aided inmate escape in Canada’s Quebec province in two years. Security forces confirmed that three detainees escaped from the Orsainville Detention Centre in suburban Quebec City on Saturday with the help of a green helicopter.

According to the police, the chopper landed in the courtyard of the detention centre for a very short while before taking off with the three inmates, heading west towards Trois-Rivieres or Montreal. Thereafter, authorities were put on alert across Quebec, in the rest of Canada, and in the United States. Provincial police Sergeant, Gregory Gomez, confirmed that “we have co-operation with all the police forces across the country and abroad also.” Furthermore, he added that “we have many, many officers who are scattering all the areas possible. Investigators are, of course, checking every lead.”

Police has purposefully avoided providing details about their investigation in order to keep it from the escapees since they are suspected of monitoring media reports. The three escapees, namely 35-year-old Yves Denis, 53-year-old Denis Lefebvre and 49-year-old Serge Pomerleau, were arrested on drug trafficking and gangsterism charges in 2010. However, investigation led to murder charges against Denis and Lefebvr. The suspects were arrested in a major police operation in 2010, dubbed Operation Ecrevisse (Crayfish), aimed at bringing down a drug trafficking ring in northwestern Quebec.
