Despite weekend-long negotiations, BC teachers and the government still stands without any new deal. In a statement issued by Education Minister, Peter Fassbender, he said that “I wish I could stand here and say we have a settlement, but we don’t.” Fassbender added that “both parties brought different proposals to the table. We had a facilitator that worked very hard between the two groups to bring the proposals forward.”

In addition to that, Fassbender alleged that the government tendered its offer to the teachers. He explained that “from the employer and government’s side, BCPSA put out a very comprehensive offer on the table. We dealt with some of the salary issues… We also talked about the class size and composition.” Furthermore, Fassbender elucidated that “I think we have a proposal that is about as good as it’s going to get, in terms of what we’re prepared to do. We have made moves and we hope that the BCTF recognizes that and responds accordingly.” Additionally, Fassbender stated that he hopes to reach an agreement by June 30th, though he adds they are prepared to bargain through the summer.

Meanwhile on the other hand, BCTF claims that the strike is imminent now since the government did not bargain over the weekend. BC Teachers’ Federation President, Jim Iker, confirmed that a full scale strike is “imminent.” Iker explained that “I hoped that you would be looking at a potential settlement. But that didn’t happen. Instead, Peter Fassbender, Christy Clark and the government’s bargaining team actually squandered an opportunity to get BC students back to schools.”
