Fatal hit-and-run suspect Jonathan Jake Cardinal charged with manslaughter

The Edmonton Police Service has arrested Jonathan Jake Cardinal, 31, the suspect alleged to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident from Friday, June 13, 2014.

Downtown Division members responded to 86 Street and 106 Avenue at approximately 9:47 a.m. this morning (Monday, June 23), to investigate a report of an unconscious male passed out in a vehicle. Patrol members approached the vehicle, subsequently confirmed as stolen, and roused the accused, suspected of being intoxicated by either drugs or alcohol. 

The accused fled on foot from the stolen vehicle, breaking through a glass patio door and entering an unoccupied residential suite, whereby the accused sustained multiple lacerations. The accused continued to evade police, entering a second residential suite and stealing car keys. The accused then fled the suite and concealed himself nearby to avoid apprehension.

The EPS Canine Unit and Downtown Division officers tracked the accused to Jasper Avenue and 90 Street, where he was taken into custody at approximately 10:12 a.m. Paramedics responded to the scene and the accused was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jonathan Jake Cardinal is facing charges of manslaughtercriminal negligence causing deathfailing to stop at the scene of an accident and theft over $5,000. Additional charges are pending.
