Calgary man Gabriel Okeynan dies of stabbing wounds

The Calgary Police Service is investigating a homicide after a stabbing victim succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

On Friday, June 20, 2014, just before midnight, a man was discovered suffering from stab wounds outside of Marlborough Mall.

Investigators later determined the man had been attacked by a group, believed to be youths.

Soon after the victim was discovered, a suspect was located in the area and arrested.

The 16 year old was charged with robbery. He cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

The victim succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy. The cause of death has been determined to be a stab wound.

The victim has been identified as Gabriel Okeynan, 45, of Calgary.

It is believed this was a random incident. Investigators are working to confirm the motive.

Homicide investigators have consulted with the Crown and have been given approval to lay a second-degree murder charge against youth in custody.

Investigators are currently interviewing a second youth. Charges have not been laid at this time.

Officers are working to identify a number of other people who may have been involved in this incident and are attempting to determine what roles they played.
