The Southeast District RCMP began a search and rescue effort at approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 24, 2014, after receiving a cell phone call from a 15-year-old boy who was lost in a wooded area in Turtle Mountain near Welsford, N.B.

A group of three boys, ages 15 to 18, planned a camping trip in the Turtle Mountain area when one of the boys got separated from the group. Members of the Grand Bay-Westfield detachment along with personnel from the Department of Natural Resources, Welsford Division located the boy at approximately 9:00 p.m. The GPS from the lost boy’s cell phone helped rescue crews locate him.

The RCMP is reminding people who plan on going hiking or camping to be prepared. It is important to plan ahead and make sure to have emergency supplies such as water, a first aid kit, cell phone, GPS, maps, signalling devices, and any medications on hand. Let someone know your plans, where you are going, the route you plan on taking and the time of your expected return.
