Investigators working out of the York Regional Police Homicide Unit are releasing the identity of a homicide victim after a stabbing which occurred last weekend in the Town of Markham.

The victim has been identified as Vandin SVAY, 28, of Newmarket. He succumbed to injuries following an altercation that occurred outside a Markham restaurant on Saturday night. The cause of death has been determined to be sharp-force trauma.

On Saturday, October 16, 2010, at approximately 11:50 p.m. police responded to a disturbance call at a plaza located at 398 Ferrier Street, in the Town of Markham. Uniform officers arrived on scene, outside the New Century Chinese Restaurant which is located within the plaza building. They learned that an altercation had taken place. Two men were transported to hospital with injuries consistent with a stabbing.

The second victim in this case, a 24-year-old Newmarket man, remains in hospital in stable condition.

The York Regional Police Homicide Unit is continuing the investigation and are urging anyone in the area of the plaza at Steeles Avenue and Ferrier Street in the Town of Markham on Saturday evening to come forward with information.
