A teenaged female pilot suffered through a small plane accident as it crashed into a backyard in Longueuil, Que. over the weekend, inflicting only minor injuries on the 17-year-old. The pilot received hospital treatment for a small cut on her forehead and was released soon after on Sunday. Luckily, she was the only one to receive any injury in the crash, which took place in the Saint-Hubert neighbourhood.
The Cessna 150 drowned soon after taking off on Saturday, and crashed into the backyard of Altagracia Echavarria. Consequently, Echavarria’s gazebo and hot tub was ruined but it could have been worse as she had been in the spa only 25 minutes earlier. Echavarria said that “I’m still in shock. I didn’t sleep at all last night,” adding that she feels lucky to be alive. According to the witnesses, the plane took off safely, made a U-turn and then dived into the yard. Several witnessed were thankful that the plane didn’t crash into anything else and caused further damage.
The Longueuil Fire Department’s Jean-Guy Ranger alleged that “it’s surprising how it happened because it’s surrounded by electric poles and everything, and it only crashed in one spot.” According to the fire department, the gazebo most likely eased the plane’s fall and possibly saved the pilot’s life. Ranger alleged that the firefighters acted quickly to contain the damage and prevent a fire from sparking. One of the resident, Yvon Chateauneuf, used his garden hose to douse the plane with water so it wouldn’t catch fire
