Trio of local Airdrie moms have arranged a sale on Saturday to help the family of missing five-year-old Nathan O’Brien get through the tragedy. Malissa Ancell is leading the first of three events, which is a trade show held at the Airdrie Ramada, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. According to Ancell, more than 100 items are being auctioned while food and face-paint vendors are donating all commissions.
In her remarks, Ancell stated that “we’re all moms, the three of us” and “If that happened to my family I would be devastated. I would not be able to work; I would not be able to focus on anything. Bills need to be paid; people have mortgages.” One of the following event will be organized by Jaime McKay, who has planned an online bidding war for any item not sold Saturday. Whereas, Ashley Podger will organize a fundraising barbecue at a local M & M Meat Shops on Sunday, July 27 at 10 a.m.
The trio had planned to come up with these events on Tuesday, after the police urged local residents to not conduct searches for the family in order not to contaminate evidence. Ancell confessed that some people have criticized the fundraiser considering that the Liknes family is able to offer a $100,000 reward for information. But she adamantly alleged that “maybe we can lift some stress off the family. Who are we to speculate about anybody’s financial situation?” Ancell said that “the amount of generosity we’ve had is unbelievable.”
