Winnipeg mayoral hopeful, Robert-Falcon Ouellette, has made a unique announcement unveiling a crowdfunding campaign for donations as an effort to be more transparent. According to the announcement made on Sunday, the university professor alleged to have had started an Indiegogo campaign to make it easier for small donors to give money and as a way to publicly disclose who is donating to his campaign.

A press release issued by Mr. Ouellette stated that “I’ve been open about donors from day one, because candidates have lot of work to do to rebuild trust in City Hall,” adding that “our message to supporters is ‘You aren’t just helping the campaign: you are the campaign.'” It was explained that the goal of the initiative is to raise $20,000 in the next 35 days, i.e. before the Oct. 22 election and so the deadline for donations is Oct. 11. Meanwhile, it was highlighted that every donation amount will be made public, along with the name of the donor, with hopes of being completely open on who is donating to his campaign and also where the money is being spent.

It was explained that donations of $5 will get donors two campaign buttons, while $25 buys them a T-shirt. A $150 donation buys a yard sign and a $1,500 donation will go to printing 20,000 candidate cards. He mentioned that “signs, buttons, shirts, posters — you name it — they all cost money” and “we will still have free buttons and yard signs, but fundraising helps us pay for it.”
