The Bureau of Immigration has confirmed on Sunday that the Jamaican-born Canadian Islamic preacher, Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, has been flown back to Canada after being deported subsequent to his detainment for being a security threat in the Philippines. Philips was made to return to Canada on late Saturday after spending the last weekend in the southern Philippines while on a lecture tour.

According to the statement issued by the bureau, the Mr. Philips was quickly deported because the immigration commissioners approved his request for voluntary deportation that allowed to cut short the deportation proceedings. It was revealed that “he was charged for being an undesirable foreign national and for being inadmissible at the time of entry.” It was explained earlier by the bureau that Mr. Philips was blacklisted due to information which pertained that he might conduct activities that were a threat to national security. It was added that Mr. Philips is believed to have ties to extremist groups since they prevented him from holding a series of lectures in the south.

Meanwhile, Mr. Philips mentioned in a post published on his Facebook page on September 14 that “rejection can be utterly disappointing but we must never forget that every closed door is a redirection to what is better for us.” He also acknowledged that he was blacklisted in the United States, Britain, Australia and Kenya, while alleging that this was based partly on statements that were taken out of context. Prior to Mr. Philips, another Islamic scholar Robert Edward Cerantonio was also arrested and deported to Australia.
