Winnipeg man Erwin John Spence charged with second degree murder

On September 21, 2014 at approximately 7:00 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services were dispatched to the 500 block of Burnell Street for the report of an injured female.

A 27-year-old female was located and transported to hospital in critical condition.

Shortly after, the Winnipeg Police Service was notified of the incident and members attended to the hospital.  There, the victim’s common-law husband was located and arrested without incident.

Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation.  It was revealed that the couple, along with their two children, had attended to the Burnell Street address the previous day to visit family.  The visit extended overnight, during which time the victim and suspect became involved in an argument.  The argument escalated to the point where the suspect physically assaulted the victim in the upper body, causing severe injury.  

Erwin John Spence 25 years of Winnipeg was charged with Aggravated Assault for his alleged involvement and detained in custody.

On the evening of September 23 the victim succumbed to her injuries.  She is identified as Jenna Marsden of Winnipeg.

After consultation with the Crown, on September 24, 2014, members of the Homicide Unit charged Spence with 2nd Degree Murder.

He remains in custody.
