The Minister of International Development, Christian Paradis, has recently mentioned in an announcement on Thursday that Canada has decided to make another $30 million available for Ebola funding to the United Nations and aid organizations working on the front lines. The written statement read by Paradis stated that Canada is “deeply concerned” with the unprecedented spread of the deadly outbreak and will provide “additional support to combat this terrible disease.”

The Ebola epidemic started in March and has so far caused almost 6,263 cases and nearly 2,917 deaths. The latest update confirmed by the World Health Organization makes the toll greater among all previous Ebola outbreaks combined since the virus was discovered in 1976. Paradis mentioned that “Canada welcomes international efforts to strengthen the coordination of response efforts, including through the establishment of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response,” adding that “however, we remain concerned that coordination efforts are not yet adequate and need to be urgently strengthened to deal with the magnitude and complexity of the crisis.”

Furthermore, it was explained that the additional funding will be channeled through “experienced humanitarian partners” and aims to work on three key areas including the treatment of Ebola patients, prevention efforts and the “broader humanitarian implications of the crisis,” including assistance with food, nutrition and non-Ebola health services. Whereas on the other hand, The United Nations has mentioned that it will require almost $1 billion (U.S.) to combat the unprecedented outbreak that is predicted to infect 20,000 people by early November if emergency efforts are not adequately scaled up.
