The Toronto’s key mayoral candidate, Doug Ford, has announced to have dropped out of a noon debate at the Empire Club at the last minute. Ford mentioned in a statement that “while reviewing my schedule with my team, it came to my attention that the luncheon at the Empire Club is not open to all people, with tickets costing $800 a table. $800, that is more money than some families make in a week.”

Mr. Ford stated that “I am campaigning to be the mayor of all people, not the mayor of the privileged few.” Consequently, Ford announced that he will be spending the afternoon canvassing in an unspecified part of the city. Whereas on the other hand, while entering the Arcadian Court on Bay Street, mayoral frontrunner John Tory stated that “I think he just decided he was afraid to debate. He’s a chicken. Colonel Sanders should be looking for him.”

Tory said Doug Ford “is a guy who doesn’t think he has to earn this job by showing up at the debates and actually standing with the other candidates and answering questions.” He added that “he’s a person that’s divisive, he’s combative, he thinks he’s entitled to everything.” Meanwhile, Chow called it “disrespectful to cancel at the last moment.” In addition to that, Empire Club president Andrea Wood stated that “we’re obviously disappointed that he decided not to join us today on the podium,” adding that “the club is very proud of its 111 year history and has hosted, we think, every mayor of Toronto.”
