The Edmonton Police Service is investigating the deaths of two 19-year-olds who were struck by an LRT train in northeast Edmonton last night.

Investigators say that a group of six young adults were walking east of a marked LRT crossing at 82 Street and 113 Avenue at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, when a northbound LRT train struck a man and woman who were stopped on the tracks.

Edmonton Emergency Services responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call from the LRT operator. The male who was struck by the LRT was pronounced dead on the scene, and the female was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries and died. There were no other reported injuries in the group.

The EPS Homicide Section was been called in to investigate whether the deaths were accidental or criminal and are interviewing witnesses and examining evidence. An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon, and the names of the deceased will be released afterwards. The next of kin have been notified.

Victim Services and the Critical Incident Stress Management Team attended the scene to provide support to witnesses, family and emergency responders throughout the evening.
