A 20-year-old soldier from Victoria, B.C., Private Steven Allen, failed to make it and succumbed to his injuries after a tactical structure collapsed during an exercise at the military training centre in Wainwright. Several soldiers were inside the tactical structure when it collapsed during exercise at 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre on Monday. However, Allen was most hurt and shifted by air to Edmonton’s University hospital but he died of his injuries.

According to a statement issued by the Commanding Officer of 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, Lieutenant-Colonel Sean Trenholm, “we are deeply saddened by this incident. Our immediate focus is to provide support to the family of Private Allen and ensure members of the unit are provided the assistance they need to deal with the loss of their comrade.” It was announced that the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service are looking into the exact circumstances of the case. Allen was recruited out of Victoria, in October 2013, and completed his basic military qualification in February 2014.

Commander of 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West, Brigadier-General Wayne Eyre, alleged that “the loss of any soldier is devastating to the military community and our condolences go out to his family and friends,” adding that “while Private Allen’s time in the Canadian Armed Forces was short, his decision to join and pursue a career in the Canadian Army speaks to the strength and determination of his character.” Meanwhile, Minister of National Defence, Rob Nicholson, also stated that “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Pte. Allen and those affected by this tragedy, including all base personnel.”
