A statement issued just after 3 p.m. on Friday by Outgoing Brampton Mayor, Susan Fennell, confirmed that she will be undergoing an emergency spinal surgery. The news has come after the mayor announced earlier on Oct. 15 that she “rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital with severe back pain.” According to Fennell, an MRI has shown two herniated discs, adding that “as a result of her condition, Mayor Fennell will not be able to attend upcoming duties and events due to this very painful and dangerous injury.”

The announcement by Fennell further mentioned that she will not be attending a special council meeting this coming Wednesday. A group of councilors have petitioned to get the meeting to address a forensic audit by Deloitte Canada, which had shockingly revealed that Fennell and her staff allegedly violated city spending rules 266 times totaling up to $172,608 over seven years. The report by Integrity Commissioner stipulating that she “knowingly” violated the city’s code of conduct will also be addressed at the meeting.

Four councillors are allegedly planning to seek maximum penalty for Fennell at next week’s meeting, i.e. a loss of 90 days pay for the code violation. Furthermore, a motion is also being planned that would demand Fennell to repay $156,000 for expenses that the auditor was not given enough information on to determine if rules had been broken. Regardless of her absence, Fennell would not have been allowed to vote on the issues since she would most likely be in a conflict of interest.
