The Manitoba NDP executives are anticipated to hold an emergency party meeting this Saturday with the agenda to establish parameters for a party leadership contest. An urgent meeting was held on Sunday when party executives learned that Premier Greg Selinger was prepared to take on all challengers in a leadership race. Thereafter, the executives convened on Saturday at the NDP’s downtown offices, whom Premier Selinger joined via teleconference.

According to several sources, the party has made a committee to examine the turmoil within the party but there were no indications about the premier committing to a leadership contest. Party president, Ellen Olfert, complained about such reports on Sunday evening, alleging that “this morning’s article turned that around.” Olfert alleged that the emergency executive meeting will determine the rules and procedures that need to be put in place for a leadership contest. Although the premier has allegedly said that leadership issue could be settled at the NDP’s annual convention on March 6-8, Olfert said stressed that “this is one of the things that will have to be discussed.”

During an interview on late Saturday, Premier Selinger stated that the party executive had accepted the idea of a leadership vote, explaining that “they accepted my proposal that puts the question of the party’s leadership back in the hands of our party members.” He stated that “this will be a chance for… me to give voice to why I think I should be leader and anybody else that wishes to do that as well.”
