Eight months into the anxious trial in a Newmarket courtroom about Jennifer Pan’s mother, their lawyer, Paul Cooper, informed that she was shot in the basement of their Markham home during a “sloppy robbery by desperate people.” Cooper alleged that the robbery was not a carefully concocted plan by 28-year-old Pan to hire men and fake a home invasion while murdering her parents in order to be free to be with her boyfriend Daniel Wong. Cooper asked in his closing address to the jury on Tuesday, “why the charade?”

According to Pan’s father, Hann Pan, he got up on the night of Nov. 8, 2010 by the voice of a man demanding cash. “Where’s the f—ing money,” Cooper stage-whispered, Hann told court. Thereafter Hann alleged to have seen three men trying to hide their identities with low-brimmed hats and bandanas. Cooper questioned “why demand money for real when it was supposed to be fake?” Additionally, Cooper pointed out that the intruders would not have spent 18 minutes in the house before shooting Hann and Bich Ha Pan. He asked “why not shoot them immediately, gather them up and shoot them?”

Consequently, Cooper alleged that he thinks that Pan had in fact wanted to have herself killed, by hiring men to shoot her, but later when she tried to call the suicide plan off for a cancellation fee she didn’t reckon on Eric Carty being involved: a “psychopathic killer” with nothing to lose and a bad shot.
