Explaining why Toronto Mayor John Tory chose him to be the city’s latest budget chief, Councillor Gary Crawford stated on Monday that “he trusts me, as I trust him.” Crawford stated that “the mayor has faith that I have the ability to do this, which is Number One.”
Crawford has earlier ran once unsuccessfully for Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party, when Tory was its leader, in 2007. At the time, Crawford was a public school trustee in Scarborough Southwest who vowed to be convinced of Tory’s integrity. Recalling Tory, years earlier, when he ran for mayor and lost, Crawford stated that “he’s honest, he’s upfront. He’s paid for some of that.” Crawford admitted that Tory’s record as a party leader was mostly one of defeat, but stressed that Tory has become Toronto’s mayor this week for the right reasons and that the two men share a commitment to the city. It was stressed that it has now become Crawford’s job as well to ensure Tory delivers on his promises and restore transit service cuts, keeping tax hikes no higher than inflation, and addressing a gargantuan public housing repair bill included.
Crawford was vetted by Tory’s transition team over the last two weeks. He was on city council’s budget committee for two years and feels he is “incredibly competent to do this job.” He alleged that “I have a lot of respect from a lot of members of council.”
