In light of the recent shift by majority of the official opposition party, Wildrose Party, members to have crossed the floor last week, many are wondering if the party should retain its official opposition status. Currently, the Wildrose Party is down to only five MLAs, i.e. the same as the Liberals.

Leader of the liberals, Raj Sherman, has stressed that his party deserves the official opposition status. He alleged to “have a serious look at the Alberta liberals, we’ve been in opposition for a long time and we want to form the official opposition today.” Sherman elucidated that “next election you need to back a sensible centrist alternative to government and that is the liberals. It is not a far left wing party or a right wing party.” Implying that the liberals are a sensible centrist alternative, he said “I’s got the same amount of money Premier Redford spent on her office and our whole budget today is $850,000 to hold the biggest, massive government in the country to account.”

Sherman pointed out that the Liberals were the opposition for a long time and know how to keep the PCs accountable. He said that “you gain the ability to do a lot more work with a lot more responsibility,” adding that “that comes with more questions in the house and it comes with a little bit more money for researchers and communications staff because essentially we’re five MLAs and we have to hold 20 ministries to account that have endless pockets. The Premier’s office alone has $4.3-million.”
