A 25-year-old Oshawa man wanted in connection with an early morning assault was arrested after a lengthy standoff on Sunday.

On Sunday, November 28, 2010 just before 3 a.m., Officers were called after a 26-year-old Oshawa man reported being assaulted while visiting a female friend at a rooming house in Oshawa. The victim reported being struck on the head by a man known to him who was brandishing a handgun. The victim was also threatened.

The male victim was taken to a nearby hospital and treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., Officers located the male suspect in a rooming house on Division Street in Oshawa. He was with an adult female and two small children who were known to him. He refused to leave the apartment and the female did not appear to be in any distress.

Since the man was possibly in the possession of a handgun, officers cordoned off the area and remained at scene while trying to negotiate with him to leave the apartment. An arrest warrant was eventually obtained and officers arrested the male at approximately 5:45 p.m. without incident. There were no injuries.

Despite the fact that the Incident Command team and tactical officers were called to the scene, this was not classified as a hostage-taking incident. The weapon was not found and the investigation is continuing.

A 25-year-old Oshawa man is charged with Assault; Assault Cause Bodily Harm; Possession of Weapons Dangerous; Uttering Threats and other charges. He was held for a bail hearing. His identity is withheld to protect the privacy of the others involved.
