Several sources have confirmed the news of envelopes containing a mysterious substance been delivered to some federal Quebec cabinet ministers on Thursday, while some fear two constituency staffers to have been hospitalized. The news has been confirmed by the staffers of two Quebec ministers but the NDP and Liberal staff claim to have no information as yet.

An aide to the small business and tourism minister Maxime Bernier, Alexandre Catta, confirmed that the envelope was delivered on Thursday morning to the minister’s main riding office in St-Georges. According to Catta, the minister was not in the riding at the time and no staff appears to have been negatively affected. It was added that the envelope was put in a plastic bag and handed over to the Quebec provincial police for further analysis. However, Catta refused to reveal any more details and instead referred to the Quebec police for further queries. Similar envelopes have also been reportedly delivered to three other Quebec members of the Conservative government.

A spokesperson for Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel, Michele-Jamali Paquette, confirmed the news of receiving a suspicious envelope containing white powder on Thursday morning. Paquette alleged that Lebel was at an event in Drummondville when he heard about the incident and so is now returning to the riding. She alleged that “he’s taking this very seriously. It is very serious.” Lebel’s riding office is located in a larger commercial building, which Paquette said was evacuated to ensure that the substance, if poisonous, would not travel through the building’s air ducts.
