On April 26, 2015, shortly after 1:30 a.m., the Southeast District RCMP were advised that four canoeists had not returned from a trip down the Cocagne River, in the McQuade, N.B. area.

The canoeists left around 5 p.m. on April 25 and had arranged for someone to pick them up at a set location at 9 p.m. that evening. When they did not return, a family member, concerned for their safety, contacted police.

The Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview Fire Departments, Ambulance NB and the Tri-County Ground Search and Rescue were all called to assist in the search. The canoeists were found safe and sound the next morning, at around 8:30 a.m.

“We would like to take this time to remind the public that the water levels are still high and the currents are very strong in most rivers at this time of year, says Cpl. Chantal Ouellette, of the Southeast District RCMP.  People should always ensure that someone is aware of their itinerary and expected return time, and that they are ready for unexpected situations.”
