Justice Minister Peter MacKay has mentioned in a statement that he feels “conflicted” to hear about the sex scandal surrounding Sen. Don Meredith, alleging that he is personally troubled by the allegations. During an interview, MacKay alleged that even though he knows the allegations are still unproven, the news that Meredith is suspected to have engaged in a sexual relationship with a teenager is “chilling and deeply disturbing.” He stated that “given that this is still an allegation and due process, as minister of justice (and) attorney general, I have to be respectful of that. But certainly, at a personal level, it’s very troubling.”

Mackay mentioned in his remarks that the Red Chamber’s leadership is supposed to deal with the allegations. Last week, Senate Speaker Leo Housakos appointed an investigation by the Senate’s ethics officer into the “serious” claims against Meredith. Before the decision, Meredith was expelled from the Conservative caucus following a Toronto Star report that alleged the Pentecostal pastor began a relationship, two years ago, with a girl who was 16 years old at the time.

According to the report, the girl claimed that Meredith entered in a relationship with her almost two years ago and they had sex twice after she turned 18. The girl claims to have met Meredith at a church-related event but none of these allegations have been proven in court. Ottawa law firm, Conway Baxter Wilson LLP, mentioned a brief statement issued on Sunday night that Meredith has retained lawyer Colin Baxter “with respect to proceedings” of the Senate ethics officer and a Senate committee.
