Officers have confirmed that a high-end vehicle found abandoned in Downsview had several firearms inside. A manhunt has been started for the arrest of the suspected drunk driver of the car on early Friday. The Mercedes C55 AMG found facing the wrong way on Transit Rd. just west of Allen Rd., north of Hwy. 401, contained religious material, a machine gun, two hand guns and silencers for two of the firearms inside.
The statement issued by police spokesman, Mark Pugash, on Friday, said that “we don’t believe the religious material is relevant to the investigation at this point.” Police explained that it was notified about a suspected impaired driver in the area at around 4 a.m., but the driver managed to escape beforeofficers arrived at the scene. Pugash mentioned that “responding officers were told the vehicle hit the curb and left the roadway.” He alleged that a search was initiated for the driver after the car was found to have weapons. The manhunt included officers from the Emergency Task Force officers, the canine unit, along with a York Regional Police helicopter. The officers looked for the driver or any other occupant of the Mercedes but no arrests were made so far.
Pugash stated that “there were silencers for the machine gun and one of the handguns,” adding that “officers also found religious material.” However, he pointed out that “at this point this, this is going very much in the direction of a Gun and Gang Task Force investigation.”
