rcmp to continue search for missing black river lake snowmobilerKings District RCMP has confirmed that it will continue its search with the underwater recovery team on Feb. 15 for a missing snowmobiler at Black River Lake. The team rescued two riders from the lake on Feb. 13, but one snowmobiler has not been located since. The search teams conducted searches for missing 26-year-old New Ross on Feb. 14.

The RCMP received a 911 call at approximately 9:55 p.m. on Feb. 13 informing them about a group of snowmobilers who had fallen through the ice while crossing Black River Lake. Upon arrival, it found three men under water and began the rescue operation as others from the area nearby came out and assisted in the search. Const. Tammy Lobb mentioned that two drivers were rescued and shifted to the hospital but there is no information available on their condition yet. Lobb elucidated that “I’m told that this incident occurred in an area of the lake that narrows and there is a current in that location,” adding that “most snowmobilers tend to go around this particular area, but it appears this group did not last night.”

There are several emergency responders assisting in the search and rescue mission including fire departments from Wolfville, New Minas, Canning, Greenwich and Kentville, along with Emergency Health Services Paramedics, Valley Ground Search and Rescue and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre’s Cormorant helicopter. According to Wolfville Fire Chief Todd Crowell, the county’s coldwater rescue team has now been involved as well. The Wolfville department stood down at 2:30 a.m. when temperature at the time of the fire call was minus 12 C.
