more attawapiskat youth detained to prevent deaths in suicide pactSources have confirmed that several youth were detained in Attawapiskat by community leaders and health officials as they battled with a string of suicide attempts. According to the reports, the remote northern Ontario First Nation declared a state of emergency over the weekend after 11 people in the community of 2,000 attempted suicide in a single day.

The nursing executive with the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority, Deborah Hill, has unveiled that Attawapiskat Chief, Bruce Shisheesh, confirmed of having heard rumors about a suicide pact among youth in the community. Hill alleged that “I had confirmation from my team early (Monday) evening that three youth had arrived and six more were en route related to this alleged suicide pact.” It was explained that the youth were apprehended before ingesting any pills or drugs, unlike the weekend suicide attempts that involved actual overdoses. Whereas on the other hand, Attawapiskat Chief Shisheesh confessed that the suicide attempts in the community have gotten “out of control.” Shisheesh stated that “today I got a message delivered by the police force…I was notified as chief that there were 13 kids that were apprehended,” adding that “that’s why I’m saying, it’s getting out of control.”

The Assembly of First Nations has called for immediate action and long-term support for Attawapiskat. It has been highlighted that only four health-care workers were tasked with addressing the crisis, none of whom have specialized mental health training, before federal and provincial officials descended on Attawapiskat on Monday.
