toronto zoo officials investigate after woman climbs over tiger exhibit fenceA recent viral video showing a female visitor at Toronto Zoo unexpectedly jumping into a tiger pen in order to retrieve a hat has drawn serous reaction from the authorities. According to the video posted on YouTube, the woman climbed over a tiger exhibit fence at the Toronto Zoo and sneaked near a seemingly agitated Sumatran tiger, enclosed by an interior fence, and climbed back to safety after retrieving her hat.

The senior director at the Toronto Zoo, Jennifer Tracey, explained that even though the woman might not have been in immediate danger from a tiger attack because of the interior barrier, the zoo visitor should have not jumped in. The zoo officials have confirmed that staff in charge of the tiger pen were away at the time of incident but it was still insisted that visitors who drop an item into restricted areas should look for other authorized personnel to assist them. Tracey explained that “the barriers are there for a reason. They’re not only there for the visitors, but they’re also there to protect the animals in our care.”

Toronto Zoo officials have confirmed to have been investigating the incident but have yet to identify the woman in the clip. Tracey made a public request to all those who witnessed the incident to come forward and help them in the investigation. She also made a plea that next if anyone witnesses such act, they should immediately inform zoo officials. Anyone who is caught breaching or violating rules on animal enclosures could be charged with trespassing or be banned from the zoo.
