Brett Baty to play in the big league with Mets

Brett Baty, the New York Mets’ second-ranked prospect, is set to make his debut in the major leagues. According to SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino, Baty is being called up after an impressive start with Triple-A Syracuse. Baty was not included in the starting lineup for Syracuse’s doubleheader against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, leading to rumors of his promotion.

Baty is expected to join the Mets in Los Angeles on Monday as the team faces the Dodgers in a three-game series. The 22-year-old third baseman missed some time earlier this season due to thumb inflammation, but he’s been in great form since his return.

In just nine games with Syracuse, Baty has a .400 batting average, five home runs, 15 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.386. Baty was a standout performer during spring training, hitting .325 with a .460 on-base percentage, making a strong case for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

However, the Mets opted to send him to Triple-A, with General Manager Billy Eppler stating that Baty still had some “development markers” to hit before making the big league roster. Eppler was present at a Syracuse game on Thursday, where Baty and the Triple-A squad were in action. Baty hit a grand slam on Friday, likely sealing his promotion to the Mets.

It remains to be seen how much playing time Baty will receive at third base. It’s possible that he could platoon with Eduardo Escobar, who has been a valuable contributor to the team. Manager Buck Showalter did not confirm Baty’s promotion but emphasized the team’s focus on their series finale with Oakland.

If Baty does make his debut, he will be the latest in a series of promising prospects to join the Mets this season. The team has been actively promoting young players to gain experience and build for the future. With Baty’s impressive performances at Triple-A, he could become a key part of the Mets’ future plans.
