Dave Nonis, General Manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Andrew Martens to an American Hockey League contract.
Martens, 30, has skated in 33 games for the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League (CHL) this season, recording 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists), a plus-26 rating and 22 penalty minutes. The 6’0, 205-pound defenceman has also appeared in 12 games with the Oklahoma City Barons in 2011-12, registering an assist with two penalty minutes. Martens, a native of Friendswood, Texas, was named Wichita’s defenceman of the year and the CHL’s most outstanding defenceman last season.
The Marlies continue their 10-game home stand Saturday when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs, AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, at 3:00 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum.
