The 2012 US Open golf championship – one of the four "majors" or biggest events on the PGA tour will be played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, which has the honor of becoming the host for the Open several times previously.
Looking at the history of the US Open, Jack Fleck won in California in 1955. 11 years later, Billy Casper got able to capture the national championship at Olympic. Scott Simpson was lucky to gain the victory at the San Francisco course in 1987. Afterwards, in 1998 at Olympic, Lee Janzen won the second of his two US Opens.
The golf fans are anxiously curious about the first- and second-round pairings. The U.S. Open begins as Shane Bertsch, Martin Flores and Tommy Biershenk teed off in the first group at The Olympic Club just after 7 a.m. Thursday. All three landed in the rough on the par-4 ninth, perhaps an indication of what awaits this week.
Past Open champion, Tiger Woods will be paired with this year's Masters champ Bubba Watson, and former Masters and PGA champ Phil Mickelson – who is excited about the current pairing as he do think that Tiger will get the best out of him. They are to tee off shortly after the first group.
This is the first time that Woods and Mickelson have been paired in the championship since Torrey Pines in 2008, when the USGA grouped players off the world ranking – the last time Woods won a major.
Earlier this June, Woods won his second PGA victory of 2012 at the Memorial tournament, and appears to be in pace to compete for his 15th major. Woods has told: "I think this is one of those championships that I think the guys talk the least to one another because it's so difficult.”
Defending champion Rory McIlroy, top-ranked Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are to start at afternoon.
As compared to other tournaments, US Open courses are extremely difficult. They are often regarded as the most difficult tests that professional golfers face as the holes are longer, the rough deeper and the greens faster.
