It is silliness for Test batsmen to get in, make 40 or 50, and then get out, especially on pitches that do not hold much for the bowling side. New Zealand made this foolishness once again on the first day at Sabina Park to be dismissed for a middling total. They will find that Test matches cannot be won regularly without hundreds on their score sheet.
Despite skipper, Ross Taylor’s struggle that the team needed to buckle down and start converting starts into centuries, the batsmen struggled to apply themselves at the crease. While Taylor and Martin Guptill both managed to reach 50+ individual scores, they were unable to take their figures up to three digits.
Meanwhile, Darren Sammy’s decision to field first, owing to the moisture left on the pitch after a spell of overnight rain, provided his seamers with a distinct advantage. Roach (17.5-2-70-4) and Best (16-1-40-2) proved particularly deadly, while Sunil Narine (26-7-66-1) and Narsingh Deonarine (12-3-43-2) also also performed well.
With Daniel Flynn out due to a groin strain, New Zealand brought BJ Watling in to open with Martin Guptill(71), but the opening combination did not provide the team with a solid opening base. Watling had only managed to bring his individual total up to 2 before he edged Roach to a waiting Chris Gayle at first slip in the 5th over, leaving his side at 10 for 1.
The Kiwis’ fortunes seem to be sleeping, with veteran batsman Brendon McCullum dismissed one run later on duck, getting a thin edge to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off Tino Best.
A total of 260, which included several contributions from tail-enders, in an innings that ended in 82.5 overs indicated they lack batting consistency.
After that, Windies stepped up to bat, with Gayle (1) and Kieran Powell (10) opening the innings. However, they only managed to reach a total of 11 runs before the day gets closed. The second day sees the Windies trailing by 249 runs – an under control situation given the fact that Gayle is present at the crease, and the team has 10 wickets in hand.
