In the first Olympics semi-final, world number six New Zealand – the Black Sticks will take on the team of Netherlands. In the earlier editions of the games, the Black Sticks have finished on 6th place for 3 times. The Netherlands will play New Zealand in 1st semi-final while Argentina will lock horn with the hosts Great Britain in 2nd semi-final for the place in Gold medal match to be played on 10th August at Riverbank Arena.
New Zealand reached the women's Olympic field hockey semifinals for the first time by knocking out world number 3 Germany. The surprising New Zealanders, who have come last three times in the Olympics, fought for a 0-0 draw, which ensured they finished in the top two of Pool B. Both the teams had plenty of chances to score, but the match ended scoreless, eliminating world number 3 Germany, who finished at 4th place in Pool B.
In the last group match of defending champions Netherlands, it faced the hosts Great Britain, and the Dutch women won the match with 2-1. The match would have been crucial for the hosts if Germany had won against New Zealand in the Pool A match in the morning session. Since both Great Britain and the Dutch had already qualified for the semi-finals, the match was only to decide the Pool A winner. With 5th win from as many outings the Dutch won the Pool A and will play the 2nd placed team (New Zealand) in Pool B.
