India began their long home season on Thursday with the first Test match against New Zealand at Hyderabad. Both teams have been badly wounded over the last year with disappointing results, and are missing some of their most reliable players over the years.
The India finished their first day on a comfortable 307 for five against New Zealand. The New Zealand’s left-arm seamer, Trent Boult was sad as the New Zealand missed out on an opportunity to put pressure on India’s young batsmen on the opening day of the first Test in Hyderabad. Cheteshwar Pujara, batting at No.3, scored an unbeaten century and Virat Kohli supported him in a 125-run stand after the loss of India’s openers. Boult collected both the opening wickets himself, those of Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, who was bowled for 19. This is Boult’s fifth Test and he’s picked up 14 wickets so far at 31.21.
While India will think they have a slight edge, New Zealand did well to pick up two wickets in quick succession before the close, dismissing Kohli and Suresh Raina. Pujara. At the end of the day, Pujara, playing his fourth Test, remained undefeated on 119 with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (29) giving him good support as the duo added 47 for the unbroken sixth wicket partnership.
