Snatching the top spot from England seems to have become South Africa’s hobby these days. After taking the top ranking in Tests, the Proteas have done the same in One Day Internationals. But the real challenge is holding on to the top rank. If South Africa loses to England in the upcoming 3rd ODI then they would lose their top spot. So thin is the line that separates these two sides.

England will be preparing well to take advantage of the available possibility of reclaiming the top rank in ODIs and their captain Alastair Cook might just show some added enthusiasm after being named the Test captain. The biggest problem for the hosts in this entire series has been Hashim Amla, and they will need to come up with a plan to handle him well.

The hosts needed to concentrate on the bowling strategy to surprise the tourists. Also England used Bopara’s services with the ball for a mere three overs in the last ODI. If the hosts don’t want much bowling from Bopara then perhaps it might make a little more sense to go in with an in form Jonny Bairstow. The English probable squad will include: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Samit Patel, 9 James Tredwell, 10 James Anderson/Jade Dernbach, 11 Steven Finn.

Hashim Amla’s extraordinary innings of 150 from just 124 deliveries was the most obvious difference between the teams but England’s fastest bowler, Steve Finn is still optimistic about halting the tourists’ run machine on Friday. The South African skipper is hopeful to put in a better performance next time and wants the rest of the batsmen to step up as well. The South African probable line-up will include: 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Graeme Smith, 3 AB de Villiers (capt/wk), 4 Dean Elgar, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Ryan McLaren, 9 Robin Peterson, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
