On the opening day of 2nd test match, Michael Clarke produced his fourth 200-plus innings of 2012 to guide Australia to 482 for 5 at stumps against a depleted South Africa attack.

The Australia captain became the first batsman to score four double centuries in a calendar year on Thursday at the Adelaide Oval from 226 balls and featured 35 boundaries and a six. He remained unbeaten on 224 when his 272-run fifth-wicket stand with Mike Hussey (103) ended after getting bowled by Dale Steyn at last ball of the day.

Australia made its highest first-day total in a Test match since the 494 for 6 scored against South Africa in 1910. David Warner belted 119 from 112 balls on a day dominated by the batsmen, despite the first session mishap when Aussies lost three wickets for 12 runs and slipped to 55 for 3 against the top-rankers. Then the skipper came to rescue Australia for the second time — and responded with double hundreds each time.

Australia made its way out of trouble after 37-year-old allrounder Jacques Kallis limped off the field in the 17th over with an injured right hamstring after dismissing Ed Cowan (10) and Ricky Ponting (4) in his opening 3.3-over 2 for 19 spell and didn’t return to the field. Morne Morkel’s figures blew out to 2 for 128. Tahir, allowed 159 runs in 21 overs.

Warner made a 155-run stand with Clarke after Kallis had dismissed Cowan and added Ponting’s wicket after Morkel removed Rob Quiney (0) in the first session.

Warner played a smashing inning and laced his third Test century before getting caught to Graeme Smith at slip by Morkel. It was the only wicket to fall between the lunch and tea intervals, when Australia added 178 runs. Afterwards, Hussey joined Clarke and kept up the momentum and reached his century just one ball after Clarke had reached his 200. The Australians scored at 5.55 an over.
