On the opening day of the 2nd test encounter, India’s new poster boy, Chesteshwar Pujara, slammed his third Test century after India recovered from the pressure well enough to finish at 266 for 6 at the spin-friendly Wankhede Stadium on Friday after Indian captain, MS Dhoni decided to bat on winning toss.
Pujara scored a double-century in the first Test at Ahmedabad and now stood out as other Indian stars struggled against the England spin duo of Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann. The 24-year-old added 97 runs with R Ashwin and rescue Indian team. Pujara remain unbeaten on 114 while Ashwin scored his second Test fifty still unbeaten on 60.
Panesar – Tim Bresnan’s replacement – secured the brilliant figures of 4 for 91. However, James Anderson was the man to provide the visitors their first breakthrough by trapping Gautam Gambhir lbw.
Pujara then came to join Virender Sehwag on crease. Sehwag, who is playing his 100th Test, played absolutely well before Panesar bowled him up on 30. He alongwith Pujara added 48 runs for the second wicket.
Sachin Tendulkar couldn’t stay for long as Panesar bowled him as well at 8 reducing Indians to 60 for 3. Pujara then partnered with Kohli and took India to 87 for 3 at lunch.
In the second session, English team picked the wickets of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh. Panesar added to his two wickets of the first session with the wicket of Kohli, who caught by Nick Compton at 19, while Grame Swann cleaned up Yuvraj for a duck to leave the hosts reeling at 119 for 5.
Pujara and Dhoni batted sensibly and added 48 runs to take India to 167 for 5 at tea. Panesar then came again to end Dhoni in the final session when Swann took a tough catch at 29.
