On the 2nd last day of second test, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis resisted the Australian attack on Sunday, in order to avoid match loss and No. 1 Test ranking.
Needing a record fourth innings of 430 to win after Australian skipper Michael Clarke declared at 267 for 8 on day four, the South Africans slumped to 45 for 4 including the key wickets of skipper Graham Smith (0) and Hashim Amla (17). But old school pals du Plessis (19) and de Villiers (12) played slowly and made 32 runs to help South Africa with 77 for 4 at stumps, hoping for a draw. South Africa, still 352 runs behind with six wickets remaining. Jacques Kallis due to his hamstring problem, has to come in down the order, can’t bowl and is unlikely to play the third Test.
Ben Hilfenhaus provided the breakthrough for Australia by having Smith ctch out to Ricky Ponting at second slip. Nathan Lyon removed Amla then had Jacques Rudolph (3) well caught by Ed Cowan to make the total 45 for 3. Immediately afterwards, opener Alviro Petersen (24) was beaten by Peter Siddle and lost his stumps.
Du Plessis scored 78 in his Test debut innings in Adelaide, and de Villiers needs to play firmly on Monday if South Africa want any chance of repeating the fourth-innings victory of 2008. The South Africans are one of only two teams have scored 414 or more in the fourth innings to win a Test. The West Indies scored 418 for 7 at Antigua to beat Australia in 2003, and the South Africans scored 414-4 in Perth in 2008 for an unlikely win over the Australians.
The Australians resumed Sunday at 111 for 5 on Clarke (38) was trapped lbw by Dale Steyn to end a 70-run sixth-wicket partnership with Hussey (54). Injured James Pattinson remained unbeaten at 29 and Hilfenhaus contributed 18 in an unbroken 47-run eighth-wicket partnership to ensure South Africa chasing over 400 runs.
Morkel and Rory Kleinveldt ended with three wickets apiece, while Steyn had 2 for 50. Tahir had 0-80 in the second innings, giving him 0 for 260 in the match, one of the worst figures in Test history for any wicketless bowlers.
