The second day closed on a better note for the Kiwis as they managed to make 169 for 4 in their 2nd innings after Proteas declared their first innings on 347 for 8 on Thursday. Dean Brownlie’s unbeaten 69 and captain Brendon McCullum’s 51 did help New Zealand in gaining the momentum after disappointing 1st innings of just 45 runs. However, they are still 133 runs behind and need to score more in order to avoid a defeat with innings and a few runs.

The 2nd innings for the tourists took the worst start when opener Martin Guptill clipped a leg-side delivery from Dale Steyn caught by Hashim Amla straight to mid-wicket. McCullum and Kane Williamson tried their best to avoid another collapse. But Williamson ended in being caught by Jacques Kallis at second slip for 15 with the score on 29.

McCullum and Brownlie played calmly and McCullum reached his half-century before getting trapped by spinner Robin Peterson in lbw at 118 for 3 following an 89-run partnership. Brownlie then slowly made his fourth Test fifty. Afterwards Kallis broke a partnership of 37 between Brownlie and the left-handed Daniel Flynn when wicketkeeper De Villiers caught Flynn for 14 off an inside edge. Brownlie and Watling remained unbeaten at 69 and 10 respectively.

Earlier, New Zealand also bowled well to tackle the opposition when Trent Boult bowled Alviro Petersen at 106. AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis tried much to resist the disciplined bowling but Du Plessis, whose test average of 146.50 after two matches caught by Chris Martin at gully for 15 with the score on 281. Dean Elgar was dismissed by Boult as he edged a catch to wicketkeeper BJ Watling for 21. De Villiers completed his 30th Test fifty with consecutive boundaries off Boult.
