By the end of second day’s play, Australia managed to take a lead of 48 runs over the tourists after reaching 342-6 on Friday.
Australian batsmen were feeling batsmen were confident to play brilliantly on a friendly wicket after dismissing Sri Lanka for 294 on the opening day. Phil Hughes and David Warner both remained unable to score centuries, while Michael Clarke completed a half century and Mike Hussey was run out for 25.
Rangana Herath and Tillakaratne Dilshan kept up the pressure with their bowling attack but need more to avoid a series whitewash. Ed Cowan got run out at just 4. Afterwards, Warner made things easy after scoring 31 runs from 21 balls, putting him in line for a knock to rival his 69-ball ton against India last year.
While at the other end, Hughes completed his half century calmly and the score got to 127-1. The score however became 195-3 after lunch as Warner was caught out by Dhammika Prasad off Dilshan. And Hughes edged ball to wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal off Herath.
2012’s Australian leading run scorer of record 1,595 in a calendar year, Clarke along with Hussey successfully built another partnership before Hussey got runout with a direct hit from Dimuth Karunaratneand was offered a standing ovation by a big crowd. Clarke completed his 50 and then was caught well by Karunaratne at midwicket off Herath.
Nuwan Pradeep got an overdue Test wicket when Mitchell Johnson, edged the ball through to Chandimal at 13. A solid seventh-wicket stand between Matthew Wade and Peter Siddle of 35 turned over the disappointing situation.
Australia would now be looking to build its lead high on day three to make things worse for the visitors.
