On the Day 2 of the Australian Open 2013 at Melbourne Park the top seeds played dominantly and there were also a few shocking upsets.
Roger Federer and Andy Murray have smoothly advanced into the second round of the Australian Open. While Alexandr Dolgopolov and Tommy Haas both surprisingly suffered losses in their opening-round matches, losing to Gael Monfils and Jarkko Nieminen, respectively.
Murray defeated his first-round opponent Robin Haase inside Rod Laver Arena, in straight sets with 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. Murray will take on Joao Sousa in the second round clash.
Federer defeated Benoit Paire in the first round in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. The Swiss star will battle the talented Nikolay Davydenko in an exciting second-round matchup.
On the women’s side, favorites Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams both won in straight sets, while two other contenders, No. 7-seeded Sara Errani and No. 12-seeded Nadia Petrova both fell in the first round in consecutive sets.
No. 1-seeded Victoria Azarenka knocked off Monica Niculescu in straight sets with a comfortable score of 6-1, 6-4. The defending Australian Open champion on the women’s side will now play against Eleni Daniilidou in the second round.
Serena Williams has beaten Edina Gallovits-Hall in straight sets flawlessly with 6-0, 6-0 in a match that lasted less than an hour. Serena will now face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the second round.
