On the 3rd day, the Pakistan remained in the match unlike their 1st innings with the help of an unbeaten 101-run fifth wicket partnership between Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq in the first Test as they reached 183 for four at stumps against South Africa at the Wanderers.

Earlier in the day, South Africa quickly started by resuming their 2nd innings and adding 68 runs before declaring on 275 for the loss of three wickets. Resuming on his overnight 63, de Villiers led the charge with a sparkling unbeaten century supported by Hashim Amla, who also remained unbeaten at 74 and put on a Wanderers record fourth wicket Test partnership of 176, beating the previous mark of 147 they had set against Australia in the 2011/12 season.

The visitors’ batting lineup seemed to be totally shattered as they dropped to 82-4 in their hunt to chase 480 runs target, but the pair batted through the final session to give Pakistan hope. They are still short of 297 runs to win but with the rain predicted on the final two days make all results possible. Misbah (44 not out) and Shafiq (53 not out) batted patiently as South Africa struggled to find a breakthrough.

The home side did make some mistakes through claiming wicket and dropping catches. However, if the weather permits, the locals would be looking to grab some wickets with the new ball.

The visitors’ second innings also did not start well as Mohammed Hafeez get caught behind at 2 off Philander. Young debutant Nasir Jamshed’s strong resistance ended when he was caught by Robin Peterson at mid-on four runs short of a maiden Test half-century off Dale Steyn. Azhar Ali (18) was trapped in front by Kallis. Younus Khan (15) was unlucky to faintly edge Morne Morkel’s delivery to De Villiers to become the fourth victim of opposition’s bowling attack.
