On the second day of 1st test match, after dismissing the visitors cheaply, New Zealand openers Hamish Rutherford (77*) and Peter Fulton (46*) guided their team to 131 without loss at stumps on Thursday.

It is the first time that Fulton had made 46 in a test since 2009. Both the openers remain unbeaten and require only 37 runs more to take a first innings lead.

Earlier the local bowlers Neil Wagner and Bruce Martin had taken four wickets apiece to shock England by wrapping the 1st innings of tourists for 167 within two sessions at University Oval.

Wagner had set the tone for a good day for the hosts by blasting the top off England’s vaunted batting order with three wickets – including captain Alastair Cook (10) and Kevin Pietersen in successive deliveries.

Soon England slipped to 81 for 5 and Martin, making his debut at the age of 32, supported his side by claiming a trio of wickets for himself.

Anderson and Finn did provide some resistance with a 47-run partnership against the hosts but Wagner ended the stand when the latter was caught in the deep by Rutherford for 20.

Martin wrapped up the innings when Wagner caught Anderson for 23. Wagner finished with four for 42, while Martin had four for 43.

The hosts devised a tidy bowling attack without over penetration and the tourists’ batsmen were largely the architects of their own downfall.

Jonathan Trott had the top-score of 45 but, like Cook, Ian Bell (24), Joe Root (4) and Matt Prior (23), he got out playing a false shot.
