On the second day of test match, former Bangladeshi skipper Mohammad Ashraful led Bangladesh’s fight back on his return to international cricket by scoring unbeaten 65 runs and supporting his team to reach 135 for 2 on Saturday after Sri Lanka declared on 570 for 4. Bangladesh are still short of 435 and needs another 236 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Lahiru Thirimanne remains unbeaten with 155 with 14 boundaries, while Dinesh Chandimal made 116 not out with 12 fours and two sixes. On the opening day, Kumar Sangakkara’s 142 set Sri Lanka way towards a big total. The partnership between Thirimanne and Chandimal was worth 203 runs, a new record for the fifth wicket in Galle and the third highest partnership at this ground for any wicket.

Earlier in the morning, captain Angelo Mathews got out after adding just two runs to his overnight at 27. Afterwards, the Sri Lankan batsmen remain in dominant position making Bangladesh’s bowlers failed to create any pressure over them.

After the declaration, fast bowler Shaminda Eranga gave Sri Lanka an early breakthrough when Jahurul Islam was surprisingly get a sharp bouncer that hit his glove and went through to the wicketkeeper at 20 slipping Bangladesh to 23 for 1.

Ashraful then partnered 42 for the second wicket with Anamul Haque, who was bowled by spinner Ajantha Mendis for 13 at a total of 65. Ashraful added an unbroken stand of 70 for the third wicket with debutant Mominul Haque (35 not out). The 28-year-old Ashraful, who had made a hundred on debut against Sri Lanka in 2001, played the Sri Lankan spinners well. He reached his half century by hitting seven fours off 67 balls.
