On the opening day of the 3rd and final test clash, Kiwi opener Peter Fulton scored his first Test century at the age of 34 – seven years after his debut – to lead New Zealand to 250 for 1 at stumps on Friday against England.

Fulton played with consistency throughout the day after England won the toss and decided to bowl first. He made 124 and remained unbeaten till stumps with 171-run second-wicket partnership with Kane Williamson (83 *). Fulton shared a 79-run opening stand with Hamish Rutherford (37) before Finn tempted Rutherford to play a wide delivery and sent a rising catch to Cook at second slip.

Steve Finn was the only Englishman to grab a wicket, with 61-1 at the close of day. Stuart Broad and James Anderson tried hard with the new ball but remain unsuccessful in claiming any wicket. Since his debut in 2006, Fulton previously had a highest score of 75 and an average of 20, before losing his place in New Zealand’s revolving door for Test openers. He won a recall for this series, four years after his last Test, and cemented his place on Friday with a solid innings and claimed to be the second New Zealander, after Zin Harris in South Africa in 1962, to score a maiden century after turning 34. He had supported his side by making sound contributions throughout the series – scoring 55 in New Zealand’s only innings in the drawn first Test at Dunedin and 45 and 46 in the second Test at Wellington, which also resulted in a draw due to periodic showers.
