On opening day of the 2nd Investec test match, Ian Bell’s hit the third ton in consecutive Ashes Tests to lead England with an early recovery against Australia at Lord’s on Thursday, as the home side reached 289 for 7 at stumps.
The Australians ruled the start with the best of, considering they lost the toss and had to bowl in hot, sunny conditions on a batsman-friendly pitch. The tourists shook the England’s batting early in the day as they picked Alastair Cook (12), Joe Root (6) and Kevin Pietersen (2) within the first six overs.
Bell came to rescue when his team was in deep trouble on 28 for 3, but his innings of 109 comprising of five hours, frustrated the Australians when they would have scented an England capitulation.
Jonny Bairstow scored 67 and contributed to a fifth-wicket partnership of 144 with Bell. But his late dismissal to a full toss from part-time leg-spinner Steve Smith, and the subsequent fall of Matt Prior, undermined England’s rear-guard effort as Smith ended with 3 for 18. Tim Bresnan was unbeaten on 7, and night-watchman James Anderson, on 4, at close of the day.
