In the qualifying round of the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open 2013, local hope and No.64 Wei Nan overcame two tough rounds to qualify for the Men’s Singles main draw. Wei beat No. 30 Anand Pawar (India) with 18-, 21-13 and 21-13, and, in the next, got past No. 38 Lee Dong Keun (Korea) with 22-20, 21-9. Wei will now play against compatriot Wong Wing Ki in the first round. Wei was among three Men’s Singles qualifiers from Hong Kong: the others include Ng Ka Long and Chan Yan Kit. The fourth spot was claimed by Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai.

No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) also played brillianty to enter into the main round in which he will face K Srikanth – the dangerous Indian player who took a game off Lee during the Indian Badminton League.

The Women’s Singles draw too boasts the very best players. The Chinese – defending champion Li Xuerui (1), 2009 champion Wang Yihan (3) and Wang Shixian (4) – are the obvious favorites.

Two Hong Kong players clinched qualifying spots in Women’s Singles. Cheung Ngan Yi and Tsang Wing Chiu made their way to the main draw without dropping a game to join fellow qualifiers, Simone Prutsch (Austria) and Aya Ohori (Japan).

Men’s Doubles will see the return of four-time world champions Cai Yu and Fu Haifeng as a pair. The qualifiers include two teams of mixed nationalities in a rare happenings: Alvent Yulianto Chandra (Indonesia) with Shintaro Ikeda (Japan) and Lu Ching Yao (Chinese Taipei) with Mak Hee Chun (Malaysia). The other two qualifying pairs were: Andreas Heinz/Max Schwenger (Germany) and Chan Tsz Kit/Lo Lok Kei (Hong Kong).

Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli are tipped for another title in Women’s Doubles. Their compatriot Bao Yixin, who reached the China Open final last week with Zhong Qianxin, has again been paired with a different partner. She competes with Tang Jinhua while Zhong partners Ma Jin.

Chun Man Tang/Wing Yung Ng (Hong Kong) in Mixed Doubles, had to fight past Huang Po Jui/Shuai Pei Ling (Chinese Taipei) with 21-17, 19-21 and 21-14. The others – Chayut Triyachart/Yao Lei (Singapore), Terry Hee/Fu Mingtian (Singapore) and Johannes Schoettler/Johanna Goliszewski (Germany) – advanced in straight games.
