In the opening round of the Australian Open 2014 on Monday in Melbourne, Novak Djokovic stepped back onto the famous hard court in Rod Laver Arena to begin the defence of his 2013 title. He began his journey in a positive manner as he beat opponent Lukas Lacko in straight sets with 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
Tommy Haas was the only seeded male who remained unable to advance to second round. The injury forced the German to retire in the second set of his match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, but did look as though he was heading for a loss all the same.
In women singles draw, Serena Williams began her search for a sixth Australian Open crown as she lived up to her tag as favourite in the opening round, losing just three games on her way to routing Australian native Ashleigh Barty with 6-2, 6-1.
Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Petra Kvitova had to suffer a loss from Thai hopeful Luksika Kumkhum, who served terrifically to down the Czech giant with 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
On Day 2 of the tournament, thrilling games are expected to happen between the big players.
Rafael Nadal missed last year’s Australian Open while recovering from an injured left knee. This year, he is among the favorites for the title and will face the Australian player Bernard Tomic in the opening round.
Andy Murray will play against the Japanese player Go Soeda in a thrilling clash.
No.2 Victoria Azarenka will face Swedish player Johanna Larsson in opening round.
