On Day 2 of Singapore Open 2014, fifth seeds Ma Jin and Wang Xiaoli were upset in the first round of Women’s Singles on Wednesday as they were defeated by the in-form Korean pair Jung Kyun Eun/Kim Ha Na with 17-21 21-17 21-17, who will now take on another Chinese pair, Luo Ying/Luo Yu, in the second round.
There were no surprises for the most part in the category, but another Korean air and fourth seeds Jang Ye Na/Kim So Young failed to advance, losing 21-19 21-18 against Singapore’s Yao Lie/Shinta Mulia Sari.
There were few surprises in men’s singles as the Swiss Open champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark suffered a defeat against Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki with 16-21 21-13 24-22.
Axelsen’s compatriot Hans-Kristian Vittinghus also suffered a loss against local hope Derek Wong, with 21-16 16-21 21-16. Wong will now take on India’s Sai Praneeth in next round.
Qualifier Simon Santoso dismissed China’s Tian Houwei with 21-14 21-17 to set up a second round contest with Hsu Jen Jao of Chinese Taipei.
Eighth seed Kento Momota of Japan was defeated with 21-17 21-16, by Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in a battle of left-handers.
From champion in 2010 to first-round loser in 2014 – Saina Nehwal was beaten by Japan’s Eriko Hirose with 16-21 21-15 21-11. Another unexpected loser was Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, at the hands of Indonesian qualifier Adriyanti Firdasari with 21-15 21-17.
Malaysia Open champions in Men’s Doubles, Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah had lost a hard-fought battle to Korea’s Kim Sa Rang/Yoo Yeon Seong with 21-17 26-24.
